LOTS of people (primarily my father) have been asking me about the food I've been eating. I have a food blog (because of course I do), but I figured for solidarity purposes I should post my filipino foods on this blog :) So, let's talk about food, baby! I took a lot of pictures of food the first month I was here, but that has dwindled a bit... it's a little awkward to take pictures of your family dinner, ha! But I will try to snag some pictures of my everyday meals for y'all. Just imagine rice. Lots of rice.

I eat soup pretty much on a daily basis. I don't eat too much of it in the States, but so far- I haven't met a soup I didn't like! This was a seafood soup at Cafe Laguna in Dumaguete. |
I still don't know what these are called...but they're delicious! |
Meat market. It smells awesome. NOT. |
This was our lunch in Bohol. It is a pretty typical meal- but nicer.
Fruit market! Top left (yellow) are mangas. Apples, mangosteen, and the bottom is JACKFRUIT!! I tried jackfruit in Uganda and have been tickled to see it here :) |
This is the "fisherman's meal" we had on Apo Island. The fish was caught before our eyes and then prepared for us. It. Was. AWESOME. |
STREET FOOD! Seriously my favorite thing about the Philippines. You pick out which meat you want them to BBQ for you and they cook it right in front of you! I am particularly fond of chicken gizzards and pork. NOMNOMNOM. |
A terrifying picture of me- but this was as I opened the first jar of JIF my parents sent me! SO MUCH JOY. |
THESE are the most delicious treats I've ever put in my mouth. EVER. They're called mango bars and we had them at the fair trade factory in Cebu. They're basically mango brownies. I could eat them every day every hour every minute. Ugh. |
THIS is python. Duncan ate it. I did not. That is all I have to say about that. |
These are the sweet potatoes Ate Raquel picked for us on her farm. We had them for lunch that day. Pretty cool to watch that cycle and then eat them! I am def eating organically. |
This is a pretty typical meal, except nicer. That's my friend Patrick in the picture too! The green thingys are seaweed. They make this texture eater a little crazy, but they're good for you (I guess...). |
My typical breakfast: dried fish, rice, maybe some bread, sometimes eggplant.
Typical lunch: dried fish, soup, rice, sometimes chicken.
Typical dinner: dried fish, chicken, rice, sometimes soup.
Last night I had a tiny little eggroll that my sister called "chicken liempo." It was DELICIOUS. I miss the South and all, but filipinos KNOW how to do their fried food! Yum!
The only food so far that I've found that I REALLY don't like is a filipino delicacy (of course I'm the jerk that won't eat it)... all my American friends like it, though! It is sticky rice with chocolate poured on top. They keep it in banana leaves to make the rice into a long roll. I don't know what it is, but the texture just doesn't work for me! That, and chocolate and rice don't exactly go together. But if this is the only food I don't like- I'm good with that! Everything is yummy and I'm getting fat. :) That's all...
Miss y'all. Eat some Snickers bars for me. And bake some cookies! (But mostly eat the cookie dough)
Abby! Now I am hungry. Those things all look amazing. And COME ON, you didn't try the python?! You could always win the "who has eaten the weirdest food" game after that!
ReplyDeleteAlso -- your mystery fruit is a rambutan. They are kind of like lychees I think? I love lychee! So eat one for me, please. I hope you're well!
xoxo
